540,000 new registrations for cars with alternative drives

Alternative drives are an essential topic in the fight against climate change and have a huge impact on the automotive industry and also fleet managers. According to the Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA), 1.4 million new passenger car registrations have already been recorded in the first half of 2021. This week, it became known that of these vehicles, around 540,000 passenger cars (38.8%) have alternative drives. This means a doubling of alternative drives in passenger cars compared to previous years.

Among the 38.8% of alternative drives are about 10.7% battery electric vehicles (BEV), if you add cars with plug-in hybrids and fuel cells, it is already 312,500 vehicles. This shows the general trend that more emphasis is being placed on alternative drive systems than in recent years. Volkswagen is leading the way as a good example. According to the Federal Motor Transport Authority, VW is in the lead with 35,923 newly registered battery-electric vehicles, followed by brands such as Tesla and Polestar. But brands like Hyundai were also in the mix with 24% and Renault with 23.1% of BEVs sold.

Rising demand for alternative drives - longer waiting times

The rising demand could also have something to do with the German government's decision to extend the innovation premium until the end of 2025. As a result, buyers of passenger cars with alternative drives will receive up to 9,000 euros net on purchase. However, the increasing demand also brings with it increasing waiting times. According to Carwow, waiting times currently range from 2 months to 14 months, with most delivery times here being less than a year.

Rise in e-cars in the vehicle fleet as well

In the vehicle fleet, too, the trend is increasingly toward an environmentally friendly fleet. But not only the current environmental awareness increases the purchase of e-cars, but also the government subsidies are increasingly helping to increase alternative drives in the fleet.

However, to drive sustainability in your fleet, it is not only important to switch to e-cars, but also that you know the consumption of all your vehicles. With Avrios fleet management, you can get a complete and transparent overview of fleet consumption and make important decisions. If you want to make your fleet greener, one option is then to focus on fuel-efficient cars or alternative powertrains.
